I wanted a frame that had the smaller spacing between slats, so not to void a mattress warranty, and it gives a more solid surface for the mattress, and no need to purchase a foundation for the mattress. It gives me some really nice room underneath for extra storage, which is why I chose the 14 inch. Putting together was not difficult, but having some help while assembling makes it easier. Furthermore, the holes line up better if someone can help hold at even alignment while another wrenches the screws in. This is one piece of heavy furniture! 2 of us had no difficulty and had it up in about 30 minutes. 45 minutes if you count getting it out of the box! AND, my 2 yr old grandson just HAD to help! There is one caveat//there is no lip on this frame to hold the mattress, however, there is a covered strip of sticky tape on each of the sets of slats, that really hold the bed in place. Ive slept on mine for 2 weeks thus far, and no problems! It all remains as solid as the first day, without the need to re/tighten screws, etc. Also, if desired, a headboard would need to be free standing behind the head of the bed, as one cannot be attached. I do not have one, but my daughter brought it to my ation.
