and Shelder Dining Chairs - pack of 2 in black - a real touch of luxury
I have not seen this brand of furnishings before but liked the display images and so was eager to examine the product in close detail.
Step by step - this is a very heavy box so ensure you can move it from your front door. Inside the box was a second box with the chairs tightly packed inside. Each chair was wrapped in plastic, the legs were almost fully covered in foam tubes. It did take a while to gently ease each item out of the box, especially given the surprising weight of the chairs. They might look flimsy in a picture but they really pack a lot of weight of their own. In fact, it took me much longer to unpack all the items than it did to make them.
The necessary bolts and allen key required are shrink-wrapped on a card - one card for each chair - and there are some spares just in case. Additionally, there is also a pair of white cotton gloves. I would suggest you put the gloves on before you begin any of the unpacking because the fabric will show any sweat or greasy hands and will have to be carefully wiped clean. The cotton gloves are an excellent addition and ensures you dont mark the furniture.
Construction - yes, this is as simple as the seller states. In my first picture I show the base of the chair with the two legs crossed and screwed on. The only real fiddly part was screwing the two leg sections together. Hint - do not tighten this screw fully because you will need to space the screw holes on the legs to the holes in the base of the chair, and the two holes at the back are closer together than the two holes at the front. Two screws go into the back (the smaller size), two screws go into the front (the larger size), and then you can work around and tighten them all carefully. And thats it! It really does only take a few minutes - I rested the chair upside down on a soft sofa to be able to screw it all together andso ensure the safety of the chair fabric.
The fabric is PU artificial leather but it really does look like leather and feels like leather. It has a slightly matte feel to it and has a lovely sheen as it catches the light (see my other two pictures). The stitching and quilting is perfect throughout.
At first I thought these chairs were a bit low to use as dining chairs so I took out a tape measure and took the height from around the middle of the chair and then compared it to the seat height of a standard dining chair. I was surprised, they were virtually identical. So clearly the bucket design of these chairs give them the appearance of being small yet they are about average height for sitting.
Comfort - fully padded although not so much that you sink into it, as you would a cushion, for instance. The low back design of the chair offers a good support to the back and I even sat on one for half an hour to read a book with no problem at all. Dining chair, kitchen chair, bedroom/dressing table chair, and clearly a chair for a reading corner if you dont need to curl up.
Although looking flimsy, that is just the contemporary design. The seller states this will hold weight up to 300 lbs, which is just over 21 stone (approx 133 kg). That is quite some weight they will take under normal use.
Having examined the chairs, constructed them, sat on them, I can honestly say there is nothing I can fault. The design is contemporary, the colour is striking, the fabric is excellent and they look really expensive.
A slight downside for me that I will mention even though it doesnt affect my opinion or my review. Firstly, the fire safety label was attached to the top side of the chair, a totally stupid place when it should really have been permanently fixed to the underside of the seat. Secondly, the YouTaste designer label is stitched to the rear sides of the seats and, whilst it is a design point, I dont see the point of having it on permanent display - I buy designer suits that have the designer label stitched to a sleeve but it is always removed before wearing. As I said, these little downsides are minor and do not affect my opinion.
This pair of dining chairs is available only in black with this PU leather-look with diamond design, so no colour choices available. Priced at £199.99 for the pair I was, at first surprised. However, before writing this review I did some research online for chairs with similar shapes and designs, only to discover most decent-looking ones were around the same price as these per chair. Therefore, I do not find the price to be high at all and considering the excellent quality of the fabric used, I find these chairs to be far superior to others I looked at today.
All in all, a real touch of contemporary luxury that should fit into many different decors in different homes. Again, take care of the weight of the delivery box and that the chairs themselves are heavy. This became an easy 5 star review.
