The instructions came with detailed illustrations but at first, seemed overwhelming to me. However, I quickly realized it was not more difficult than building a LEGO set and I could do almost all by myself. I only had to ask for help to place the upper bed on top of the other and for a few other steps. The hardware, tools, and parts were all labeled with stickers which made the assembly for me much less complicated. The bunk bed parts are all made of wood and there were no plastic pieces. Since there were so many pieces to assemble, it took me a whole afternoon to finish it. Once done with the assembly, I could then see that the top rails are high enough to secure the mattress and to prevent a sleeper to fall off. I also pushed against the bunk bed to check if its stable enough for rowdy youngsters and it stood its ground. The white paint is the same hue as shown and doesnt have a tendency to flake off. Also, as its not very tall, slightly over 5 feet, I can make the upper bed without having to stand on a step stool. And, if necessary, I can dismount the upper bed and place it directly on the floor. Good.
